Early age cracking of concrete can seriously impair the service life of a structure, by for instance allowing for the more rapid ingress of aggressive media. Consequently increasing attention is devoted to this topic in literature. Due to the specific mix design often used for their production SCC might be prone to higher shrinkage and as a result potentially a higher cracking tendency than Traditional Vibrated Concrete (TVC). This paper presents an evaluation of the cracking tendency of SCC. Since free shrinkage experiments alone do not allow for the assessment of this cracking potential - given that other parameters such as creep, stiffness and toughness play an important role - restrained shrinkage experiments were conducted. The ring test was chosen due to its simplicity and versatility, but even more importantly due to the extensive experimental data and knowledge with regards to the analytical modelling, which has already been gathered in literature. This paper presents a detailed analysis of the cracking (and relaxation) tendency of SCC compared to TVC.
